New Delhi to Enforce Six-Week Construction Ban to Combat Air Pollution
IN · Published Sep 29, 2026
• New Delhi has announced a six-week ban on construction activities from 10 December 2026 to 20 January 2027 as part of its winter action plan to address severe air pollution.
• The city, home to 30 million residents, frequently experiences hazardous air quality due to emissions from power plants, vehicular traffic, construction, and crop stubble burning.

Impact & Risks

The construction ban and other measures are expected to reduce pollution levels in New Delhi, which often records PM2.5 levels exceeding 300 micrograms per cubic metre—20 times the World Health Organisation's recommended daily maximum. Prolonged exposure to such pollution can aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The restrictions may also impact the livelihoods of construction workers and related industries during the ban period.
